An analysis of 45.2 million citations shows that social media earns 2.5x more AI citations than brand websites, and that YouTube long-form videos are cited 51 times as often as Shorts. We break down strategy by platform and by content format.
Between October 2025 and February 2026, Goodie AI analyzed 45.2 million citations across 10 AI services, including ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. The study covered the social media accounts and official websites of more than 250 brands, and it showed that social media plays an extremely important role in AI citations.
The core finding: Social media platforms earn roughly 2.5 times as many AI citations as brands’ official websites. Social media accounts for 4.2% of all citations, compared with 1.7% for official websites (owned media). Earned sources such as news and reviews make up about 72%.
YouTube is far ahead as the most-cited social platform, with its citation share rising from 31.2% in October 2025 to 45.9% in February 2026. Reddit also maintains a steady presence, and LinkedIn has consistently held a 10–17% share.
X deserves special attention. 99.7% of citations of X (formerly Twitter) depend on its integration with Grok AI; AIs other than Grok cite X content only rarely. X’s citation share has also fallen from 28.8% to 8.4%.
76.2% of all social media citations are concentrated in the following three formats.
| Content format | Citation share | Characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube long-form videos | 32.0% | AI extracts the transcripts |
| Reddit posts | 28.4% | Real discussions and opinions become reference sources for AI |
| X posts | 15.8% | Limited to citations via Grok |
YouTube long-form videos are cited 51 times as often as Shorts. The ratio is 5.8:1 for LinkedIn articles versus feed posts, and 3.7:1 for Instagram Reels versus still images. The reason long, text-dense content dominates is simple: “AI doesn’t watch videos; it reads transcripts. It doesn’t scroll feeds; it extracts structured text.”
This extractability principle changes the fundamentals of content strategy. Long, information-dense content with a stable URL has an overwhelming advantage in AI citations over short content built to go viral.
Each AI platform favors different sources. Perplexity draws 75% of its citations from YouTube long-form videos. Grok relies on X posts for 72.2%. ChatGPT cites Reddit for 61.1% and LinkedIn articles for 18.8%. DeepSeek relies on LinkedIn articles for 64.1%.
What this data shows is the importance of asking which AI your target customers use. Identifying the AI platforms your customers rely on most, then investing in the social platforms and content formats those AIs prefer, is a rational starting point for an AISEO strategy.
(1) Prioritize format over platform: what format you publish in matters more for AI citations than where you post. (2) Match platforms to AI models: allocate your social media investment according to the AI services your customers use. (3) Treat social media as reference infrastructure for AI: rather than chasing reach on each individual post, aim to become part of the source graph that AI systems draw on.
